VEES BLANK WESTSIDE; STREAK EXTENDS TO 24
PENTICTON, BC- Penticton got goals from four different players, three on the power-play and Mike Garteig made 17 saves for his second shutout in a row, as the Vees blanked the Westside Warriors 4-0 Friday.
The victory pushes the Vees win streak to 24 games; five back from tying the BCHL mark set by the New Westminster Royals in 1989-1990.
A word to describe Penticton’s performance would be perseverance. The Vees peppered the Westside goal in the first period and were thwarted time and again by Dwayne Rodrigue.
It took a power-play just shy of the mid-way mark to break the scoreless tie. Travis St. Denis redirected a pass from Joey Benik at 8:24 of the opening period; the goal was his 26th of the season.
That score would hold up until thirteen minutes into the middle frame when the Vees converted on another power-play.
Connor Reilly wired a wrist-shot underneath the cross-bar past the glove of Rodrigue; his 30th coming at 13:24 of the second period.
Penticton added one more in the second, again on the power-play. Off a scramble in front of the Westside net, Mario Lucia poked in a loose puck for his 29th goal at 17:30.
The only goal of the third period came off the blade of Joey Benik, just as the Vees killed off a Warriors power-play.
Zach Urban picked up a loose puck at center and skated in on a two-on-one with Benik; Urban firing a centering pass which Benik shoveled in at 6:59.
Mike Garteig posted back-to-back shutouts, both by scored of 4-0. The goose-egg was his third of the season and 11th for his career.
