Hockey Canada announced the three Canadian Rosters for the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the Vees’ Dante Fabbro (98) and Tyson Jost (98) are among the 66 players that were selected.
Fabbro was one of 22 players selected on Team Canada Red, who are grouped with Slovakia, Sweden and the United States in Group B. The Coquitlam, BC, product is tied in the team scoring lead amongst defensemen with three assists in four games. The rear-guard came to the Vees after a very successful 15-year-old season with the Northwest Giants of the BC Major Midget League (BCMML) this past season. Fabbro led all BCMML defensemen in scoring putting up a staggering 22 goals and 61 points in just 38 games. Fabbro was a member of the Burnaby Winter Club prior to playing in the BCMML and was named the HOCKEYNOW’s BC Minor Hockey Player of the year in 2013. Fabbro and Jost won a silver medal with Team BC at the 2013 Western Canada Under-16 Cup in Calgary, Alberta, last November.
Jost was named to Team Canada White, who are in Group A along will Team Canada Black, Finland and Russia. The Leduc, Alberta native is currently tied with Mitch Newsome for the team scoring lead with three goals and seven points in just four games. Jost suited up for the Okanagan Rockets last year and was the BCMML scoring champion putting up an eye-popping 44 goals and 88 points in just 36 regular season games. He led the BCMML in playoff scoring as well, notching nine goals and 18 points in seven games, leading the Rockets to their second BCMML championship in franchise history; Jost’s Rockets beat Fabbro’s Giants in the Final. The Rockets bested the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs in the Pacific Regional Qualifier, to advance to the Telus Cup Midget National Championship in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Jost had three goals and six points in seven games at the Telus Cup, helping the Rockets to a Bronze Medal.
The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge is in Sarnia, Ontario November 2nd-8th and for the first time in tournament history, features three Canadian teams-Black, Red and White. From 1986-2014, the tournament featured five Canadian regional teams: Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec and West.
