NANAIMO “CLIPS” VEES IN MATINEE
NANAIMO, BC– The Nanaimo Clippers scored twice on the power-play, including the game-winner in the third period, as they doubled up the Penticton Vees 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Frank Crane Arena.The loss is the second in three games for the Vees, as they finish with three out of a possible six points on their Island Division road trip.
Clippers Captain Trevor Fitzgerald opened the scoring in the first period in an unconventional manner. Fitzgerald, from behind the goal-line, had his centering pass deflect of a Vees defender and through Chad Katunar’s legs at 10:50.
The Vees manufactured the tying goal late in the period, as Mike Rebry evened the game on his tenth goal of the year 17:03. Rebry and Wade Murphy exchanged passes down the right-wing, before Rebry put a low wrist-shot past the blocker of Jason Argue on the far-side.
The Clippers scored the only goal of the middle frame on their second power-play of the game. Kevin Miller broke down the middle and stepped over the Vees blue-line and put a long-range wrist-shot past a startled Katunar at 13:13; Miller’s first goal in Clipper colours.
Just like in the first period, the Vees capitalized late in the third period to even the game at two’s. Ryan Gropp pulled into the left-circle and zipped a back-door pass to Alex Jewell at the far-post; Jewell’s second goal of the season coming 13:50. The celebration was short lived, as Nanaimo pulled ahead once again less than three minutes later.
On a controversial hooking call against Penticton, David Iacono put the Clippers ahead for good. Iacono capitalized on a fortuitous bounce off the end-glass, charging the net after the puck bounced back out front at the near-post; Iacono’s power-play tally coming at the 16:00 mark. Greg Trichilo put the game away with an empty-net goal in dying moments of the game. Trichilo skated on to a loose puck in the neutral and slid the puck into the yawning cage at 19:37.

Vees Notes
In the loss, the Vees surrendered the opening goal for the fifth time in their last six games. Wade Murphy did extend his point streak to eleven games with an assist on Rebry’s goal in the first period.
