The Penticton Vees Jr. ‘A’ Hockey Club is pleased to announce goaltender Brendan Barry (97) has committed to Clarkson University for the 2017-2018 season.
“Brendan has had a tremendous track record, leading his midget team to a Telus Cup and has now strung together an outstanding rookie season, as part of the best goaltending tandem in the BCHL,” said Vees President, General Manger and Head Coach Fred Harbinson.
Harbinson looks forward to having Barry in the fold for the next two seasons, “We will continue to help develop Brendan’s game over the next two years and he will be a great addition to the Clarkson program in 2017.”
The 17-year-old rookie netminder is 10-2-0-0 in 14 games this season, sporting a tidy 2.06 goals-against average and owns a .912 save-percentage; Barry has two shutouts to his name. The Kelowna, BC, product is just the second ’97 born goalie in the entire Canadian Junior ‘A’ Hockey League to have secured an NCAA Division l commitment.
Barry has enjoyed a meteoric rise between the pipes, as he started the 2013-2014 season as a 16-year-old rookie with the Okanagan Rockets of the BC Major Midget league (BCMML). Barry lost only one of his 19 regular season starts with the Rockets, before he entrenched himself as their number one in the playoffs. Barry was fantastic in a three-game Pacific region playoff series against Red Deer, and backstopped the Rockets to a bronze medal at the Telus Cup in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
The Clarkson Golden Knights play out of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and their campus is located in Potsdam, New York. Currently four Vees alumni dot the Clarkson roster, as James De Haas, Bryan Sinz, Ben Dalpe and Nic Pierog are currently wearing the green and gold. Barry is the 15th player on the Vees roster to secure an NCAA scholarship.
