BCHL alumni continue to make hockey headlines this offseason in the world of NHL management.
The Edmonton Oilers announced Friday the hiring of former Penticton Broncos forward Bob Nicholson as the team's new vice chairman of Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG).
It brings to three the number of BCHL alumni that have taken on new jobs in NHL management in the last eight weeks. Brad Treliving, who played for the Penticton Knights in the 1986-87 and 1988-89 seasons, was hired April 28 as general manager of the Calgary Flames . Last week, former Langley Eagles and Richmond Sockeyes defenceman Brad Pascall was hired by the Flames as an assistant general manager.
For Nicholson, the post with the Oilers comes after a hugely successful, 16-year run as president of Hockey Canada. Prior to that, the 61-year-old was the technical director of the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association from 1979 to 1989 before becoming senior vice president of hockey operations for Canadian Hockey.
Nicholson played three seasons for the Penticton Broncos and finished second in league scoring in the 1972-73 campaign after putting up 42 goals and 78 assists. He went on to a collegiate career at Providence College and UBC.
Other BCHL alums in NHL management include Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland (Vernon Vikings, 1973-74), Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis (Burnaby Bluehawks, 1982-84) and Minnesota Wild director of player development Brad Bombardir (Powell River Paper Kings, 1988-90).
