PENTICTON, B.C. – As the old adage goes, it’s not how you start but how you finish. The Penticton Vees came back from a 3-0 first period deficit to beat the Vernon Vipers 5-4 in overtime, Saturday at the SOEC in Penticton.
Brock Reinhart capped off the come-from-behind win, as he scored with just 16 seconds left in OT, as the Vees beat the Vipers for the second time in as many meetings this season. Both of Penticton’s wins against Vernon this season have come after they trailed going into the third period.

Saturday’s game was highlighted with dramatic swings of momentum, as Vernon dominated the first period, just to see the Vees mount a dramatic second period comeback.
It was all Vernon early, as the Vipers went up 3-0 after 20 minutes and outshot the Vees 9-2 in the opening frame. Landon MacDonald opened the scoring at 4:38 for the Vipers, then Vernon defenceman Edvin Nilsson made it 2-0 at 6:06.
After Vernon made it 2-0, the Vees switched goalies, as Andrew Ness was replaced by Will Ingemann. Despite the switch, the Vipers scored again. Shorthanded, Shea Busch scored on a two-on-one, to put Vernon ahead 3-0 at 14:54.
Penticton started the comeback in the second, as they scored three unanswered goals. Nolan Stevenson scored on the power play at 2:33, as his fourth made it a 3-1 game. Then, the Vees got a shorthanded goal of their own, as Anselmo Rego scored at 4:42 to make it a one goal game. Rego scored on a breakaway, tucking the puck underneath Vernon’s Colin Reay for his fourth. Luke Posthumus brought the Vees back level when scored at 10:32 on a rebound off the end boards for his fifth.
The game was tied for all of six minutes, until Vernon went back ahead, as Luke Bibby tipped in a point shot at 16:23 to put the Vipers up 4-3 after two periods.
The Vees came back again in the third period, as Ryden Evers scored on a rebound at 13:33, as his sixth goal tied the game 4-4 and eventually forced overtime.
Both teams had heavy legs in the extended three-on-three overtime period. The Vees won the game in the dying seconds. Matthew Cataldo chipped the puck to Brock Reinhart, who broke in alone and beat the Vernon goaltender on a backhand deke. Reinhart’s second, coming in dramatic, walk-off fashion.
