2008-09 Penticton Vees Season was ?More Than Just a Game?

The Penticton Vees theme for the 2008-09 Season was ?More Than Just a Game? and this couldn?t be more accurate when it comes to the Vees community involvement. This year the Penticton Vees made 35 different visits to support the community.

The Vees had a 28 week schedule this year, minus one week for Christmas break, two weeks of playoffs, and one full week when the Vees headed to the lower mainland to play the Coastal Conference, which left the Vees 25 weeks to be out in the community. The team played 74 games, had 105 practices, went to school, travelled for out of town games, and some of the players worked at jobs, which left little time for extra-curricular activities. However, the Vees still managed to fit in 35 different community events this year, meaning the Vees were out helping the community at least or twice a week.

Vees Assistant Captain Devon Krogh has been at the head when it comes to the teams? involvement in the Community. ?Community visits and school visits are important to our program, the fans come out and support us on game nights, so we want to do what we can to give back to them? Says Krogh. Krogh is moving on after two years with the Vees organization, next season he will continue to play hockey at Ohio State.  The Vees were the first group to start the ?Read to Succeed? program, where players visit local area schools and spend time reading with the students. This has been a popular program, and has been adopted league wide, as well as by some teams in the AJHL. School visits usually end in a friendly game of ball hockey against the Vees players.

From dog walks at the SPCA, to Operation Christmas Child, and Wendy?s Dream Lift day, the Vees players try to get involved in as many activities as possible. Penticton fan support has been the back-bone to the success of the program right from day one back in 1951 when over 3000 fans packed memorial arena.
